Via Mr. Jones, I see that a British publication has held a poll-thing to determine the "100 Greatest Albums of All Time". Of course, we're only talking rock albums here; don't look for, say, Georg Solti's VPO rendition of Der Ring des Nibelungen, or any of the seminal Celtic music albums by the Battlefield Band, or any of the great Charles Gerhardt film music albums, and so on.
Rock music tends to form the smallest portion of my own musical listening, so it's no surprise that I own less than ten of the one hundred albums so designated (read the entire list here). Of the Top Ten, I only own one (Dark Side of the Moon, and frankly, I like The Wall more anyway). Many of the artists listed are represented in my CD collection by various "Greatest Hits" compilations. I'm glad to see Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits on the list (#46), as I think it's the best thing I heard in the entire 1980s. I'm surprised that there's nothing by Van Halen; but then, it is a mainly British list (by that I mean, mainly decided by British rock fans). And I'm stunned that the only country album is by Shania Twain. I'm sorry, folks -- Shania Twain's got a nice voice and she's, you know, hot and stuff, but her best album is less worthy than Willie Nelson's worst.
And I may as well admit that I think Alanis Morisette sucks. I find her voice screechy and unpleasant, and her lyrics trite and uninteresting. There, I said it.
Oh well. Maybe I'll look into this "Oasis" band one of these days. They seem to be somewhat highly regarded. (Seriously. If you held a gun to my head, I still wouldn't be able to name a single Oasis song. I don't know shit about them.)

Wow... I can't believe it. I actually have one of the albums on the list. Dark Side of the Moon. I have very few rock albums and most of them are "greatest hits" albums.
Don't waste your time on those Oasis albums. You won't like them. They're just so much more noise.
That list was compiled by a British alternative music magazine, and their bias is hanging in the wind for all to see. They are trying to tell us that the top ten albums of all time include two Oasis albums, and two Radiohead albums? And that one of those Oasis albums is number one? Of all time? What a load of crap.
Seventeen. (mostly Beatles/Smiths). I do own a lot of the other bands/groups, but not the particular listed albums.
Didn't know I was that interested in "popular" rock music.
This is a list voted on by Britons, yet there is NOTHING by the Kinks!? No Face to Face, Something Else, Arthur or Village Green Preservation Society? For one of the most influential Brit Invasion outfits, that's a pathetic oversight. At least one of those albums should've made the list, and strong case could be made for more.
