A Useful Election-time Reminder

From Matthew Yglesias:

They'll probably kick me out of the Sneering Journalists Club for saying this, but I think politicians generally deserve more credit than the pundits give them. It's simply not the case that most policy problems have these super-obvious solutions that we could implement tomorrow night if everyone had an extra dose of Honesty & Nobility.

But then, widespread acceptance of this notion would require some serious attention to policy on the part of the people and some serious attempts to cover it on the part of the media, so we'd best file this away for things we'd really really really like someday, and continue to accept our elections as focused on stuff like who got drunk in 1974 and who testified against Vietnam in 1972 and who pronounces it "nucular" and who looks French and blah blah blah.
