From about 1968 to 1980 all of the major malls in southern California had a Raj of India store. I loved it and spent a large part of my paycheck in the one in The Esplanade Mall in Ventura County. Indian bedspreads, incense and burners, bead curtains, sari silks, carved teak EVERYthing... That being said, I also miss Pier 1 Imports the way they used to be, before they got trendy and upscale. Going to Pier 1 used to be like visiting a bazaar in Marrakesh.
So you get two: Raj of India and the original Pier 1 Imports.
Jordan Marsh, back in the good old days when it was a real department store with a great bakery, a book department, and everything you needed. And because I hate Macy's, which eats regional stores.
And while I'm at it, Borders Books, back in the good old days before they went public and the new geniuses at the top destroyed everything that made the company different and good.
It was a safe haven for us folks who couldn't care less about what was being played on KISS 98.5. You walk in there and see the records and cds, the tshirts, the fliers for upcoming shows... it was comforting. You can't get that from buying music online. Now that I'm older I may value the convenience more, but I feel sorry for all the 15 year-old kids who won't ever be able to get that experience. Now I feel old...
I don't know how I missed this. It doesn't matter - to everything, there's a season. I HATE to shop. Though I have nostalgic feelings about Woolworth's.

The real Maxwell Street Market, where you could get everything. I love oddball flea markets.
Home of the Hits!
