Shorter Jeff Simon

"In any article I write about Roger Ebert, half the words will be about how I hate Gene Siskel and that teevee show that proved that they were both better critics on teevee than I'll ever be in print."

Seriously, this guy's inability to ever ever ever mention Ebert without also venting his eternal hatred of Siskel and their teevee career is at this point pure pathology.

This dude's attitude about Siskel AND Ebert both, as well as their groundbreaking TV show (which I'd wager did a lot more to inspire average people to think about and discuss movies than anything Crist or the Almighty Kael EVER did) is dripping with the same kind of snobbery he disses Siskel for displaying.

What an asshole.

I got into a FB pissing match with someone today. First my friend wrote: "I believe that if, at the end, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do. To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our health, our circumstances. We must try. I didn't always know this, and am happy I lived long enough to find it out."

In response, other guy writes: "Man, I couldn't disagree with this more. I think one's life should be reckoned in terms of achievements, what the hell else is remarkable about our social lives beyond what we've accomplished? I realize I'm being critical, but it's easy to tell this quote comes from someone in the entertainment industry before even reading its author. All the same, I feel the essence of this remark is vain, and merely a justification to ignore the greater issues most people choose to ignore pursuing so-called happiness." I replied at length, essentially defending the well-lived life.

Jason: He's actually not that bad, although there are times in his writing when I say "Geez, somebody open a window!" But he has this tic when it comes to Roger Ebert, and he's nursed it for years. He cannot write about Ebert without once again shouting his loathing of Siskel and Ebert's teevee work from the rooftops.

Mr. Simon: Thanks for stopping by!
