In Washington State, Mt. St. Helens emitted some steam today, which is a possible precursor to eruption. I, of course, live on the opposite side of the country from the volcano, but that wasn't always the case: I lived quite close to it in 1980, when it last erupted.
If it erupts this time -- and scientists apparently think it's likely -- it could affect my inlaws, who live in northern Idaho, depending on how the winds blow. Take it from me, folks: shoveling a few inches of snow isn't nearly as hard as shoveling a single inch of volcanic ash.
