Tacitus points out that, even as Iraq seems to be possibly developing into "quagmire" status, there are possible signs that something positive may emerge from it all. I certainly hope so, since my feelings on the war were always of the "It's probably necessary, but I don't trust this bunch to not bungle the aftermath" variety. We'll see. The problem is not with the formation of a post-Saddam government, but in making sure that government doesn't end up being yesterday's news the way the post-Taliban government we created in Afghanistan did. If these people are in Washington a year or two from now, begging not to be forgotten like Hamid Karzai recently was, I won't be too impressed.
