It did strain the credulity slightly that Rakhat was so Earth-like.Kelly Sedingerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10704114189919711467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3338557.post-1156346175686105262006-08-23T11:16:00.000-04:002006-08-23T11:16:00.000-04:00I enjoyed it quite a bit, and found it quite engag...I enjoyed it quite a bit, and found it quite engaging. It's a flawed book, to be sure, but it's just so ambitious you can easily forgive the shortcomings.

At Armadillocon many years ago, I got to talk a little with Russell after a panel (wonderful woman, by the way). I asked her if she'd ever seen the movie or read the book "Black Robe," because I got a strong vibe of that while reading THE SPARROW. (Disclaimer: The following may or may not be mangled by faulty memory and/or the fog of time) She gave me an amused look, and said she wrote THE SPARROW because of "Black Robe." When the Jesuit goes back at the end of the film, knowing he's facing certain death, that troubled her greatly, she told me. Not that he would do such a thing, but because the film hadn't effectively established his depth of motivation. "He went because he's holy," just didn't cut it for her. That was a cop-out, as she saw it, so approached her book with the intent to examine that issue very intensely. She succeeded very well in that regard, I'd say.Jayme Lynn Blaschkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02919766841748858790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3338557.post-1156346116756722232006-08-23T11:15:00.000-04:002006-08-23T11:15:00.000-04:00Thanks for the review.
