I really like the way Tolkien starts out in LOTR. A lot of people complain that it's too slow, but for the length of the book, it's about right. Incidentally, I read Book 1 last, after 2 & 3, since the school library didn't have Book 1 in. Didn't really seem to matter, I was hooked anyway.
