A Random Wednesday Conversation Starter

(Before the question: I have not forgotten about the outstanding Ask Me Anything! queries! I swear I'll get to them. I'm behind on posts I want to write, but I'm farther behind on other stuff. I'll have that shield down, you've got to give me more time!)

OK, the question: What is your favorite 'polite' (i.e., you can say it in front of your mom without fear of getting your mouth washed out with soap) expletive? For SF readers, what's your favorite fake expletive or curse?

I was a long-time user of "frack" before the BSG remake put it on the map and made it explicitly a substitute for that other popular F word. Given my negative feelings for that remake, though, as well as my basically contrary nature, I don't use it much anymore. It's like when your favorite hang-out becomes popular; you don't want to go there anymore.

I do,however, live for the opportunity to throw "felgercarb" into my daily conversation...

I've always loved: "Curses and Naughty Words!" which was the expletive of choice for Neddie Seagoon from the old Goon Shows.

Favorite "polite" expletive: I am always amused by my oldest son's invention, "bull feathers". I also like archaic and British expletives. In particular I like "poppycock" but I can never remember to use it when an opportunity comes up.

Favorite SF expletive or curse: Usually, fake curse words sound silly to me and sort of kicks me out of the story and back into reality. Words like "felgercarb" spoiled the original Battlestar Galactica for me. "Frack" is okay but I can't say I particularly like it. I really like the way cussing is done in Firefly. The Chinese swearing works better for me than made up or substituted English words. The exception, and my favorite "fake" sci-fi curse, is "ruttin'".

Feck.

I would totally say that in front of my mother-in-law. Maybe not my kids.

I should note, though I can't remember any of the particulars except 'buffalo chips,' that Col Potter on MASH was quite good with them.
