Once More Unto the Meme....

I recently kicked off a blogging meme regarding John Scalzi's "Sci-Fi Movie Canon", and now John's taken one of the film canons from the same book series (but by a different author) and presented it for the same treatment. So, here goes: the "Comedy Film Canon". I've bolded the ones I've seen, and added a wee bit o' commentary.

Airplane!
All About Eve
Amelie
Annie Hall
The Apartment
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
Blazing Saddles
Bringing Up Baby
Broadcast News
Caddyshack
Le diner de con
Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Well, only quite a few parts of it, but I'm counting it anyway.)

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
Duck Soup
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Ugh. The only part of this film I found funny was the mishap involving the car and an ill-fated attempt to reverse the odometer.)

Four Weddings and a Funeral (Coulda been a great movie had they cast, oh, anybody other than Andie MacDowell as the love interest.)

The General
Ghostbusters
The Gold Rush
Good Morning Vietnam (Way too much sentimental shit at the end of this movie.)

The Graduate
Groundhog Day (Strangely enough, I loved Andie MacDowell in this movie.)

A Hard Day's Night
His Girl Friday
Kind Hearts and Coronets
The Lady Killers
Local Hero
Manhattan
M*A*S*H
Monty Python's Life of Brian
National Lampoon's Animal House
The Odd Couple
The Producers
Raising Arizona
Roxanne
Rushmore
Shaun of the Dead
A Shot in the Dark
Some Like it Hot
Strictly Ballroom
Sullivan's Travels
There's Something About Mary
This is Spinal Tap
To Be or Not to Be
Tootsie
Toy Story
Les vacances de M. Hulot
When Harry Met Sally...
Withnail and I

I really need to see more than a few of these, obviously. I confess that I don't like Woody Allen all that much, although I haven't seen Annie Hall, which I've often seen cited as his best movie. It baffles me that A Fish Called Wanda is not on this list; it's one of the funniest damn things I've ever seen, and as good as There's Something About Mary is, Wanda is nearly sublime. It's got gags that still crack me up to this day, and it took me at least five or six viewings to even pick up on some of the gags. I also think The Full Monty is just great. Another British comedy that I dearly love, and really need to see again, is Hear My Song, which has a gag involving a cow, a railroad tie, and a really deep well that has to be seen to be believed. And I know that The Naked Gun is just Airplane! transposed to a police squadroom, but it's still among the funniest damn movies ever. (So is Top Secret!, which deserves a place in the Comedy Firmament just for introducing the phrase "Anal Intruder" to the English language.) And how about The Princess Bride? And yeah, Toy Story made me laugh a whole lot and it put PIXAR on the map and all. But for my money, no piece of feature-length animation has made me laugh harder than The Emperor's New Groove.

SO there you go.
